Soundings

Soundings are taken by throwing a lead weight over the side of a ship and counting the fathoms along the plumbline attached to it to find out how deep the water is. (One fathom is 6 feet.) The plumb line measures how far below the bottom of the ship is a solid - that is "sound" - floor. This is where we get the term, plumbing the depths.
