In the second half of the 16th Century, Seafarers and City Dwellers must have felt very modern in their times. Printing presses turned out books that the well-to-do could afford and translating from one language to another was in vogue. Noble families educated their children in classical languages (along with sword fighting and mathematics). Grainne certainly knew Latin and English as well as her native Irish. I bet she knew some Spanish and French, too, since she traded in those countries.
Queen Elizabeth I famously translated texts from Latin to English. She even asked for an Irish Dictionary. Makes one wonder if she and Grainne spoke a few languages in their famous meeting.
So many books in circulation with all their topics must have felt to the people of the time like a new movie coming out seems to us. I wonder what the Best Sellers were?
